Even Nature Sleeps

It’s good to know that even nature closes the blinds and curls into a cozy ball for the night.

The first photo was taken at 2:40 p.m. one Saturday afternoon.

So glad I my friends stayed late and that I walked them out. I don’t usually come in that door at night.

Peonies

I like peonies. Do you? I think they highlight my luxurious fur.

Candy, Treatment, or Poison?

These lovely bottles appear to contain candy. But that’s not the case, so far as I can tell by the labels.

These were on display at Brooke Lodge in Augusta, Michigan. I’m not sure if they are still there, because last I knew, the gorgeous place closed.

These are medications from yester year with Upjohn pharmaceuticals. Some names are Sodium Chloride, Cathartic Vegetable, Phenobarbital, Acetylsalicylic Acid, Ferrated Liver Concentrate, and, lastly, Iron, Strychnine, Arsenic, and Mercury compound.

Some are still used today. Some are no longer recommended to healthy living. Some have little if any impact. What do we use today that will work tomorrow, be ineffective on a regular basis, or lead to our demise?

(PS: No accounting for spelling even though I tried to enlarge the names on the bottles to read them.)

Hay Season

It is hay season ’round these parts.

This is back breaking work. It can be win or lose depending on the weather. If you store it damp, it can burn your barn to the ground.

And yet it’s easier than my father’s hay season. These wagons are designed for a “kicker bailer”. A kicker bailer creates the bail and then kicks it into the wagon. The high sides are to catch the bails. You can’t fit as many bails in the wagon, but you don’t need two guys on the wagon pulling the bails back and stacking them. It’s still good to have someone bring you fresh wagons and take the full wagon’s back to the ranch.

One thing hasn’t changed: You still need help to unload. Whether it’s your own barn or someone else’s, it must all be put away until it’s use … and that takes people power. Usually two people in the barn and one or two on the wagon are needed. The more bodies, the quicker the work goes.

Morale of the Story: No matter how times change, people power is remains required to get anything done.

Returning Home

Returning home from a long weekend away, there are two reactions:

  • The one says … “Where where you! Why did you leave me? Never go away again!”
  • The other thinks … “She doesn’t exist until I can find forgiveness for this grievous abandonment in my heart.”

Happiness is … (004)

… fresh fruit! Especially this fruit when I take it home, soften some raspberry sherbet, mix the two together, and freeze for a sweet treat later.
