Fire & Ice

2013-02-11 19.10.52 Small SignedTonight’s post is not about humor, it’s about humility. America’s First Responders humble me. Tonight the roads were slick and undesirable for driving. I don’t care to drive on ice slicked glass, and that was the condition I saw beneath my tires.

When I came across an accident, I ended up in line to pass it. There was one police car there, but no other for the eight or more vehicles. Shortly, fires trucks pulled up on each side of my car from Oshtemo Fire Department. What a blessing that all ambulance, fire, and police persons are trained in medical care.

As I child, I never understood why anyone disliked the police. My grandfather fell out of apple trees three times during my lifetime. Each time the first to arrive was the Fire Department. Second on the scene was the Police Department. Lastly, and after grandpa was stable and responsive, came the Ambulance Team.

At our country home, the Fire Department was nearest. Those men (no, there were no women) were always first and worked to stabilize my grandpa. Next were the Policemen (again, no women) who asked us gently what happened, and were impressed that a full-time apple man of 70+ years had fallen from an apple tree during active duty. Lastly were the Ambulance personnel (of course, no women) who loaded grandpa into their emergency vehicle on the Fire Department’s backboard.

For me, First Responders mean help, assurance, and kindness. I give thanks for them helping out all of us who were foolhardy enough to travel the roads this evening. I am humbled by the gift they give to the community.

Morale of the Story: No matter if it’s a fire wreaking havoc or icy roads causing crashes, the Fire Department and other First Responders are there for us!

I Like the Colors of the Rainbow

Today I was finally putting away multiple loads of laundry. Only two loads were from today, one load from a few days ago, and two loads from two weeks ago. I don’t understand it. I enjoy clean clothes, and it only takes a few minutes to put clothes in the closet and dressers, but I don’t do it until my room looks like FEMA would be needed to put the clean clothes away.

Of course, by the time I do put them away, some have cat hair and others are too wrinkled to wear. Then it takes at least half an hour to get it all back in place.

Today, I not only put my clothes away, I hung them in the closet by color. I like color. I was surprised to find how much blue there is in my closet. I’ve worked on lots of red and brown, but I hadn’t realized the blues were up there. This way, I was able to eliminate from my closet any duplicates to donate to the Kalamazoo Free Store.

There are two items I won’t be getting rid of any time soon, even though I don’t wear them. One is a blue sweater with leaves embroidered on it. It used to belong to my Aunt Gladys. I miss her, and I enjoy having something that was close to her heart. The other is a plaid green and blue (it’s in the green section) that was my dad’s. I have many happy memories of him in that shirt.

All in all, it was a successful day. The laundry is done and put away until I procrastinate another day. I replaced a bulb but broke the 63-year-old glass shade, and I spent time petting all four cats.

Morale of the Story:
Don’t count the broken lamp shades, count the colors of your life.

Good Kid Discount

Today I read an article on “Shine from Yahoo” about a restaurant that gave a “Well Behaved Kid Discount”: http://shine.yahoo.com/parenting/restaurant-gives-family-discount-having-well-behaved-kids-192500505.html. I was very impressed that a restaurant did this, and yet I know some very well behaved kids myself whose parents should have been receiving this discount for years.

My great nephew Lukas and great niece Nicole are amazing kids. Their parents can be a bit strict, but the pay off is huge! Every  moment I’ve spent with their children, I have found pleasant. Every time I’ve taken them to a restaurant has been a dream come true:

  • They do not whine about the wait
  • They read the menu and make good selections
  • They entertain themselves while waiting for the meal
  • They talk with me about life and school
  • They gladly take home any leftovers
  • They never talk bad about anyone in the restaurant or any food they didn’t really like
  • They always say “please” and “thank you” throughout the adventure

There was one interesting time eating with Lukas (about five-years old) that I will never forget. All of the above was true, but there was a twist. Before taking him to a late lunch, we had spent the morning at “Ag Days” which used to come to a local mall. There were farm animals to pet, all of the details about dairy cows and chickens, tables explaining gardening and canning, samples of locally grown foods, and much more.

After our festive morning, I took him to eat at the local Big Boy on his way home. After ordering burgers, we talked about what we’d seen in the morning and some of the take aways he was given (the people had been super nice to him and made it fun). Then, our food came. You know, cow meat. But he’d just pet a cow and her baby. He took one look at that sandwich and asked me where the meat on it came from. I told him the truth. He laid the patty aside and put it under a napkin.

Lukas ate all the rest of his meal that day, minus the patty. He never complained or asked for a different meal. He just ate what remained on his plate – a cheese sandwich with fries. I don’t believe he’s taken issue with meat since, but I will never forget his gentle manners that sunny afternoon when he was sad to learn about where our meat comes from and what it looks like before the meal.

Morale of the Story: My great niece and nephew are awesome, and their parents have given this world two beautiful, irreplaceable gifts I count as blessings daily. Talk about well behaved kids? I can do it all day long.
