Perspective

Today all my mind is able to concentrate on is that my sweet little girl lost a canine tooth. She’s 15, so it’s not exactly a surprise … although her sister has eaten more human food, so I always thought her teeth would go first. This is a sign of aging I’m having a hard time living with.

The gray section of my bangs? It actually looks like I’ve had it colored, and people compliment me on it. I let them know it’s all God’s doing.

The wrinkles by my eyes and on my forehead? No big deal, it’s just skin.

Pretty sure menopause is coming? Thank goodness, let’s get it over with and be on the other side!

But my cats’ tooth? Oy! This is my little honey bunny who plays with her toys. My sweetheart who still runs through the house like a cheetah each night at 10 p.m. My monkey bunkey who touches my face to wake me when I over-sleep. To see my friends, family, and cats age … it’s not easy.

Moral of the Story: Love hurts. And yet life is beautiful if you do it. This thing that hurts = Do It!

Jam at E&S Sales in Shipshewanna

WARNING: Using Jelly and Jam interchangeably. Please forgive me.

Have you ever been to Shipshewana, Indiana? For me, it’s a fun town where I can spend the day, but be home in time to be a vegetable in front of the tele at night.

There are many things I adore about this town. It has lovely small farms (mostly Amish), you’ll see horse & buggies all year round as you drive (drive slow and give the horses room), great restaurants with delightful chicken and pie (raspberry cream), many independent stores, a fun scrapbooking AND candy store in one, and plenty of yarn, bead, and craft stores to keep my friends and I out of trouble for hours (or is that getting into trouble?).

A store I hadn’t been to in any previous trip was E&S Sales. It is a bulk, cash-only grocery store. My friend warned me about it, and I can honestly say I’ve now been there THREE times this summer. Yep, that’s a lot for me considering the distance. Each time was a great ball of fun to see the town, once including a musical, always a dinner out, and then shopping at E&S Sales to take new treasures home to taste.

Here are some options just from the jelly isle. We’ll start with the usual suspects…

Jam P1020885

Then we move on to some I am not familiar with. Mint I’ve seen at holidays, but both plum and quince are new to me.

On this trip I picked up a plum to try. But since I have to finish each jar of jelly in the fridge before opening a new one, I have to finish the guava from World Market first. So, no, I don’t know how it tastes yet. But I like the guava – it’s mild.

Jam P1020884

On my second trip I selected dandelion. I’m going to try that before plum. After I finish the guava.

Kiwi sounds interesting, but I’m quite certain elderberry will be great.

Jam P1020886

I know red raspberry is good, but I’m not interested in trying the one with jalapeno added to it. It’s just not my thing. Is it your thing? Sasafras might be next on my shopping list.

I did not buy a third jar of jelly on my third trip this summer. I started the summer with guava, and I’m going out with guava. They should make these smaller so I can get through them faster!

Jam P1020887

I’m thinking I’ll skip sweet pepper since I don’t generally care for them. Tomato I like in juice and on my pasta (sometimes), but I don’t need to test this one either. Perhaps the watermelon is an option.

Jam P1020888

Now we’re getting back to safe ground, with the exception of orange marmalade. It’s just not for me, but my mom likes it, so I still might see it in the fridge. I tried passion fruit in the spring (after a triple berry from Meijer and before the guava from World Market) because I read about it in a book. It’s pretty good. Mild, but pleasant.

Jam P1020889

Yeah, fruit cocktail can stay right there. Apparently the one I need to get my hands on is gooseberry! Not one jar left. Hmmm… must be good stuff.

Jam P1020890

What jelly or jam would you try? What have you had? What’s your favorite? Also, what do you eat it on?

Dinner Bell

This is our old family dinner bell. When I was little, my mom would go into the backyard and ring it when meals were ready. We needed it because she couldn’t always find everyone to hunt them down to come in to eat. Also dinner time changed with the seasons. We ate a bit earlier in the winter and later in the summer – always depending on how many hours of sunshine in a day.

Over the years, the farm has not needed the bell anymore. Now, it is surrounded by a lilac bush and other trees and brush. You’d have to look to find it.

It is a relic on our farm, but one that still brings back happy memories of mealtime together with family, farm hands, friends, and good food. My friends were often smiling at first when my mom told them that everything on the table but the salt, pepper, and butter came from this farm. After a moment, they’d look at their meat and think of the cows in the dairy barn or the pigs in their pen and frown. One of us would look at that friend and say, “Yes, that too.”

This memory always brings a smile. I know how odd it can seem thinking of what you’re eating differently when it relates to what you just pet in the backyard. And yet, eating meat that way is far healthier than the single patty at McDonald’s which is a compilation of 100’s of cows. Plus, each cow or pig lived a fairly long life and was treated with the utmost respect, a healthy diet, and room to roam. Only 100 years ago, this is how we all ate meat. Don’t worry, I still respect my vegetarian and vegan friends.

I also remember eating potatoes from our own garden all year because they were stored in the well house, veggies from the garden and fruit from the trees because they were canned or frozen, and there is nothing like that home-canned tomato juice! Now my juices are flowing!

Moral of the Story: Farming – a way of life, or a life few will ever know again?

Wicked Good Pizza

Wicked Good Pizza is the name of a restaurant I ate at in October 2010 while traveling for work. It is in Frankenmuth, one of the towns I most appreciate in Michigan.

They had clams on the menu. Not many restaurants do. We were shocked by their size and enjoyed every bit.

When I say huge, they were thick like a roll of Life Savers and about as long too. Oh my, they were fried up just right. Nice and crisp. Perfectly warm, not too hot. Even the cole slaw was tasty. I’d definitely go back.

Moral of the Story: Don’t write about food on an empty stomach. These are not local to me. Now what do I eat for supper?

What Happens in Vegas (05)

Just one of the pleasant sites in too hot Las Vegas. No idea now where we were, but this was a refreshing site for my sweaty self.

Have I mentioned lately that it was TDH there? TDH stands for Too Doggone Hot … in this particular instance.

What Happens in Vegas (04)

A friend and I on our free evenings in Las Vegas (days spent inside at a conference) enjoyed walking in and out of many casinos. We had no intentions to gamble, just to enjoy taking photos of each one and see the interior decorating wonders. I think I was a bit more interested in the outside of Casino Royale that the inside. I had high hopes of seeing a 007 figure. No such luck.

However, in this ridiculously hot desert city, the McDonald’s was more than a mirage with ice-cold water and nice cold seats. I’m not usually one to sing the praises of McDonald’s but three things came together for this: a) Ice cold water, b) cool air and cold seats, and c) clean bathrooms!

Moral of the Adventure: There is nothing so refreshing in all of the world as ice-cold water in the heat or hot tea in the cold.

Look to the Light

No matter what’s going on, give it your best to look at the brighter side.

When your car breaks down on the way to work and it’s pouring rain while you try to fix it waiting for AAA, look at the bright side – it could have been smashed by a semi (and the insurance would kick in).

When your cat hacks up hair balls making you late to work because you needed to attempt to clean up the mess before leaving, look at the bright side – they survived the event (and you have no vet bills).

When you wake in the middle of the night and spend hours on the porcelain thrown with an icky tummy, look at the bright side – it’s only IBS and not the stomach flu (you CAN go to work on 3 hours sleep).

When you attempt to pay some bills online just before bed and only half of the websites work for timely payment, look on the bright side – you were able to pay the phone bill to call in the rest of the payments.

When you have company for dinner and plan only to have a baked dinner (zucchini with dill, green and yellow beans with sage, spinach with red onion, baked potatoes, and peach cobbler), and the stove and oven is out of commission so you serve it raw instead (minus the potatoes), look on the bright side – eating these veggies is considered healthy to most (but will cause that IBS attack later in you).

When you’re on the way home on a hot (to the point of ozone action) summer day and you get stuck in traffic for over an hour … after buying ice cream for your family, look on the bright side, you made it home! And home is where the cat will teach you to look on the bright side … anyway.

The Task at Hand

There are so many things to do in life … at work and at home. Some days, the oomph doesn’t go to far … anywhere.

oomph definition
[ʊmpf]

  1. n. energy; drive and vitality. : Come on, you guys. Let’s get some oomph behind it. Push!

There are many things I desire to do, but getting them done sometimes seems a burden. The only way I can do that is to break projects down, inch by inch. It might take me longer, but in the end, the results are achieved. I mean, I have learned to make scarves (at least 10!), ten years of my life are scrapbooked, and the list goes on.

Granted, the fabric you see below is not yet a quilt. It is a quilt top, and I’m ready for the batting (sp?). Yet, there are many other projects that interest me more: clean clothes, clean bathroom, three squares a day, and having a root canal.

Oh well, maybe one day I’ll get  some oomph to get it done. In the meantime, I have clothes to wear, a bathroom that smells fresh, meals to eat, and even the occasional dental visit to get through first. Yep, my priorities are set.

Moral of the Story: Priorities change.

First Day of School

Tomorrow morning is the first day of a new school year for public schools in Michigan. So many things come with this new season…

  • Perhaps learning a few things in math, science, and English
  • Worry over how to dress, what to say, where to go, what to do
  • Learning who to talk to, which teachers to trust, and what food is safe in the cafeteria
  • What activities do you participate in? Baseball, band, or basket weaving?

I have no answers for you. My only guidance is to learn to trust your heart and allow your mind to work with it. As a teenager, I remember the two didn’t always go well together (the heart and the mind).

Dear Lord,

Please be with all students, teachers, and administrators. So many new adventures are at hand for all. Help each one to find goodness in each and every day.

Amen!
