I WILL Finish!

Someday, someone will receive this simple double crochet scarf. It’s been over a year that I’ve been working on it. Meanwhile…

In other news, my niece started this project this year and finished a few months ago. Only a few hundred of those tiny squares all crocheted together to make a handsome baby blanket. So…

at some point I will finish my simple, little scarf. Fortunately, everyone is different, works at different paces, has different abilities, and sets different goals.

One day, I will give this scarf away … and it will be complete.

Do You Dream in Color?

Do you dream in color?
I do! Usually fabrics, yarn, and scrapbook papers.

Do you dream in texture?
I do! Usually clean cottons, Angora fur, and mulberry paper.

Do you dream in sound?
I do! The click of corner rounders, the clink of crochet hooks, and the chink of pottery on the table.

Do you dream with scents?
I do! Clean cottons, fresh cut paper, and ink from pens.

Moral of the Story: Dream of what you enjoy, be it at night or in the day.

Uh-oh! Pinterest Got Me!

Ever since I managed to get on Pinterest, I haven’t had too much trouble staying off from it … for the most part.

They send me these weekly “suggestions” or what-have-you. So far, they haven’t snagged my attention.

Until tonight! One of the suggestions was an image of a crochet stitch I’d like to learn.

Two hours later, I am just dragging myself away. I’d swear to you that was only five minutes!

Property of The Cats

If you live with a cat, you may not actually own much. My cats own certain things that I thought were mine. For example, my crochet. Once I thought it was mine. For five seconds flat. Then I learned it was theirs.

While crocheting, the yarn moves from the ball or skein of yarn into the end product. This is enticing to most felines in my life. The end product can also be a delight to them. They love to be surrounded by soft things, and I prefer working with the soft yarns. We have the same tastes.

Over the years I’ve been a sucker for soft, fluffy pillows and blankets. None are mine. They know soft. They know comfort. They take possession.

One such blanket was the vellux deluxe. Light yellow. Softer than my cats. No matter where this is in the lay out of blankets and comforters, they find it. When I get home from work each chilly winter day, one or more of the cats have dug down and is either on or under the vellux deluxe blanket.  Again, it’s no longer mine.

Oh, the bed? Yeah, it’s not mine either.

But do I mind that what was mine is now theirs? Not for one moment. Those little fuzzy lovies are worth it. Besides, legally pets are property, so what is theirs IS mine. (But if you ever tell them that they are legally property, you’ll be very, very, very sorry. And it won’t be people bearing weapons that you should worry about. It will be 8 and 10 point fuzz balls of wrath.)

Hooking, It’s For Me!

After years of trying, a dear and treasured friend finally taught me to crochet. There was only one problem, after a few lessons (including some difficulty figuring out how to make squares and not triangles while cussing frequently and making everything so tight that a teeny weenie flea could not squeeze through my stitches), I was hooked!

But that meant I had a love of yarn. So soft, so many colors, so many gauges, so many textures, and so many choices! I have balls … of yarn! Oh, the yarns I can weave!

That meant I needed the various hooks. Small, large, arthritic handles, bamboo, metal, oh my!

Lastly, there are the projects. Even though I only knew single crochet for years, I could make bags with buttons, bags with cinches, washcloths, scarves, and even cat toys, oh boy!

Where am I going with this? Well, when it comes to gifts, you’ll never guess what you’re getting! Just be assured that it’s been made with a hook and yarn. I’m a happy hooker!

Crochet Words

A dear friend, Lynn, believed that I should learn how to crochet. I was already into so many crafts, what’s one more? I could scrapbook, make cards, and bead jewelry. She believed that I needed to find the pleasure of a portable and relaxing hobby. The others don’t transport well.

After two years of nagging, she won! In my first lesson we learned a few things:

  1. I’m not good at reading crochet instructions (too many abbreviations)
  2. I’m no good at turning corners
  3. I’m a tight hooker
  4. I say bad words when frustrated (well, this wasn’t new)

I was to make a simple square dish cloth. These lessons culminated in my first project being an impenetrable sheath of triangle that could not be taken a part even with loud vocalizations. Had I done it right, I could have pulled out the yarn and started a fresh project. Nope, not me.

Lynn’s second lesson was to loosen me up. Shake out the hands. Watch a calming movie. Use a larger hook than is required. Shake out the hands again. After an hour or so, I was finally catching on. Within a few weeks, I’d actually made several square dish cloths. I moved on to start a scarf.

In the meantime, life happened and I got busy. Months later when I went back to crochet and had a third lesson as a refresher, I picked up the scarf again. I even finished within a few more months. Come to find out that over time, I had become a calm crocheter and had loose, healthy stitches. The only problem being that my scarf is now wider on one end than on the other.  No, I, the phenomenal photo taker, do not have one single photo anywhere to prove that my first scarf is not perfect (and there will not be one).

Today, I thoroughly enjoy sitting down with hook and yarn. I can crochet happily for hours. I’ve not made a blanket yet, but I’ve done several scarves, small bags, and dish cloths. I’ve moved on from single crochet to double, and from squares to circles. I thank Lynn for this amazing gift.

In the beginning, I cussed constantly. I said every horrible thing I could think of at the time. I put together new phrases just to express the frustration. How dare she even consider teaching me such a horrific hobby?!

I was wrong. She was right. (See, Lynn, I put it in writing.) I take all of it back and pile upon her love, gratefulness, appreciation, and enthusiasm for teaching me to be a happy hooker!

I am blessed with amazing friends. Lynn has put up with a lot over the years. We disagree on many things, but on crafts, love of family and friends, and hope for a better tomorrow, we not only see eye to eye but also heart to heart.

Morale of the Story: Don’t discount that your friends know you better than you know yourself. The good ones do!
