Giving Thanks – November 26

I give thanks for joy! It’s not something we have in every moment, but it is something we can have in every day – even in little bits.

  • A walk in the sun (or a run if you’re so inclined)
  • A favorite song on the radio
  • A call from a treasured friend
  • A completed project, that’s been long in process
  • A glass of ice-cold water on a hot day
  • A cup of hot tea on a winter’s night
  • A laugh that’s unexpected and makes you smile all day
  • A pull through parking spot near the front door of the store
  • A beautiful shade of yellow (a little peachy)
  • A cup of butterscotch pudding

Giving Thanks – November 21

Giving thanks for friends and their pets. Not only do I have heart for furry friends, but most of my friends do as well. Some friends of these friends were born, as I was, with an innate love of the amazing canine and/or feline companions. I not only get to be honored by the presence of my friends, but also their pets who are greatly loved. Although this little guy got in trouble with his mom when I stayed in their home last year. I woke up with him  as my blanket. Oops!

All well-loved pets should suck up MORE to company because those are the alternate feeders. Dogs (and particular cats) know that their parents/caregivers will feed them – it’s unconditional. But they also know a good backup plan is invaluable. Just in case something happens to mom and dad, perhaps her friend will take over the multiple meals per day (and many, many snacks).

No More!

Have you ever told someone, “No!” and they just didn’t listen?

You know, like when I’m taking your photo and you wish I’d go away and leave you alone?

Well, guess what this guy is saying?

Or is it the grass he just pulled from the ground by the root?

Moral of the Story: We don’t always know the truth behind the image. And it doesn’t always matter.

Take a Sniff!

No matter what your day involves, find a scent you love and take it in.

Fresh mowed lawn, pumpkin pie, new bailed hay, just dug carrots, and new rain are a few I enjoy. What are yours?

Moral of the Story: Inhale! Take a sniff of the world. It makes some things feel right no matter if things are right or not.

(NOTE: I mean of the air around you. NOT of drugs and junk.)

But…

My brother pulled over to talk to me. His two dogs were in the car. The brown dog was sitting in the middle and the black dog had the window. The brown dog has been with us for over 10 years. He feels he owns the joint. He also feels the window is his.

After a while, we heard a “thump”. When we looked back at the truck, the brown dog had the window and the black dog was climbing back up on the seat.

As I walked over to take a photo of the dog’s adventures, the brown dog gave me this sad, apologetic look. He knew that it wasn’t typical behavior to push someone over, even another dog. But can’t you just see in those eyes that he NEEDED the window seat? Thank goodness dogs tend to be quick to forgive!

Moral of the Story: Sometimes when we reach for what we want, we knock people over. Think twice about your actions and your words. I know I need to do this more often.

Seek and You May Find: A Happy Tail

Today’s post was to be different, but my night took a twist.

Tonight was the township’s fireworks display. I walked out to see them, back by the gardens. I could see them well, so I called my brother asking if he’d like to watch them with me. He said he’d seen them, but his dog Lucy was missing. He’d been searching for an hour, and there was no sign of her.

I walked to his house and offered to help. After some discussion, we agreed to take both trucks and leave one out where he’d last seen her. That was way back in one of his orchards. He’d spent the evening hand thinning some of his fruit trees, and she’d been with him.

By the time we got the trucks out there and he opened his door, Lucy walked right up to him! Now I know he will sleep well, she was just frighted first by someone with gunfire earlier and later by the fireworks, and that she will come when she feels safe to the sound of the truck.

I know this isn’t every pet care giver’s outcome. I know the lost are not always found. My heart goes out to all who have endured seeking with no finding.

But tonight, we give thanks. As soon as he told me the situation, I began to pray. That praying has not ended, because now I give thanks.

Morale of the Story: It’s worth the effort. When a loved one is in need, taking the time to do whatever you are able, especially if it’s praying, it IS worth it. Do what you are able, where you are able.

Things I Know: Dog Roommates

I’ve only known dogs since I came home from the hospital a week after birth. (Once upon a time, new mothers stayed in the hospital a while to adjust to the new wee one for which they must learn to care for every minute of every day.) Due to these years of experience with hounds, I make this list of the things I know of doggie roommates to help future roomies.

  • Their eyes will get to you. These eyes will entice to you feed them treats, give them pets, let them in, let them out, let them in, and, in general, do their bidding.
  • They are resilient. They do get hurt, they can get well, but no one knows forgiveness like a dog.
  • They are never full. Well, they are full, but they will never stop letting you know that a little bit more here, and a smidge of that over there, would make them happy.
  • Their love is unconditional. This is a responsibility you have to love them back with as much adoration and enthusiasm. So it’s out of love that you don’t provide all of the treats requested. And they will forgive you for not doing their bidding.
  • Tail wagging is good.
  • Showing their teeth is bad.
  • Walks are the best!

To Pee or Not to Pee

Good day! My aunt thinks I’m too smart for my britches, and I must be because I don’t have any britches (see how wise I am). She thinks this because of my pee.

You see, when I stay overnight with her, she lets me out just before she heads to bed. If I go outside, I know that when I come back in, I’ll get a treat. So, sometimes, I just go out to pretend to tinkle so that I’ll get that treat. I’m old, and I don’t always feel like peeing anymore.

She’s too smart for her pants too! She tells me she can hear when I don’t go, because when I do pee, it sounds like Niagara Falls. Caught in the act of cheating!

Morale of the Story: Don’t cheat the treat giver. Never jeopardize the yummies!

Sometimes, You Just Have to Sit Down … On The Job

The Humane Society held it’s annual Kalamazoo Dog Walk at the Prairie View Park in Kalamazoo County on Saturday, May 4th. A few of the dogs in the rescue, seeking forever homes, came to the event to show off their awesomeness.

At the end of the day, sometimes, you just have to sit down on the cooler to rest your wary bones. This young gent needed a break after being a great sport all day long. Praying he finds his forever home soon!
