In Time for Christmas?

Have you ever made home-made Christmas presents? Just in case, this is something to consider, let me share with you how this could go…

  1. There’s this great home-made gift idea! It is awe-inspiring and everyone will appreciate it and use it.
  2. It is a few months before the holidays
  3. You’ll plan to work on it over the weekends
  4. The flu will entangle a weekend
  5. Sinus pain and ear aches envelope another weekend
  6. There are too many activities required at church and with family and friends taking up valuable weekend hours
  7. It’s okay, there’s always next weekend
  8. There’s that girls’ weekend you’re hosting and will need to put the project away to make room for company
  9. No projects come out again for another three weeks while you forget that Christmas IS coming
  10. The materials run short and shopping at craft stores ensues
  11. It’s 5 days ’til Christmas and 90% of the project has yet to be complete
  12. At this point, do you start shopping or stay awake around the clock until it’s done?

I’ll let you know.

My Favorite Present

The favorite present someone gave my uncle for Christmas. He left it overnight for me to enjoy. I adore fleece!

A cat laying on the carpet enjoying a new flannet shirt that was a Christmas present.

Secret Sister

At church, instead of Secret Pals, we have Secret Sisters. My secret sister didn’t really do much early in the year, but she’s been spot on for a while now. I was also sadly negligent to my secret sister in the beginning because I mis-placed the sheet of paper, so I have no ill will toward the one with my name in her pocket.

For my birthday, this secret sister gave me an incredible gift! I not only adore cats, but also the artist Charles Wysocki. He created fun cat art and many other enchanting paintings over his career. Yet, I am highly doubtful my secret sister knows this. I don’t hide my appreciation of cats, so that part of the gift might be expected. I was truly delighted to find the two together: Wysocki and a cat. Hmmmm…. who is this sensational sister?!?!

Even my deary appreciates such a fun gift! Thank you, secret sister!

Dad’s Gifts

My dad wasn’t big on gifts. He felt that being your best everyday was a gift to all of your loved ones. (I, on the other hand, am my best only now and again, so friends and family are very likely to receive gifts from me.)

After my dad retired from dairy farming (not from farming, just the dairy), he had more time on his hands. He and mom could take more time when they ran errands for the farm since there were no bossies waiting for his return. They would not only stop for lunch near their destination, but visit friends or family, stop by the nature center, and do a little site seeing.

On one of their afternoon outings, they enjoyed the Nature Center. It is always a delight to be there in that protected space. A while later, my mom received a hummingbird wind chime set that they’d seen at the Nature Center’s gift shop. My mom was thrilled! Not only did he get her a gift, but he had to go back later to do so!

Actually, dad gave us all gifts every day: a pleasant conversation, not judging us when we made mistakes, showing us his love of animals, sharing his memories, and so much more.

Today, the hummingbird chime is still in our front yard. Mom and I still think of dad when we see or hear it. One of those gifts that keep on giving.

Moral of the story: The greatest gifts of all, are the gifts of time, talent, and talk.

Kalamazoo Animal Rescue: January 2013 Newsletter

I am one of several volunteers who write for the Kalamazoo Animal Newsletter. I do not foster these heroic animals – I’d keep EVERY last one!

Here is the January Newsletter. I was the fortunate volunteer to write the article about China and Dexter. Our two remaining dogs who survived the hoarding house in Allegan County, Michigan back in April of 2012. They are still hoping for a forever home. Together would be better.

Morale of the Story: Cats and Dogs are gifts from a loving God. Treasure them.
