Christmas Eve 2013

Wishing you a festive Christmas Eve! This night has always held much anticipation for me. Seeing family, giving gifts, taking photos, sharing photos, enjoying meals with loved ones, reading stories of Christmas, and watching Christmas movies all make this time of year special, and this night exciting with anticipation. The work is complete, and now it is time to celebrate.

With the house decorated, we often set off for the Christmas Eve service at church (weather permitting – of course). This year’s service was just as joyous as those in years past. A time of delightful anticipation with singing, the story of the Christ Child, and seeing beloved friends. There were two awe inspiring solo’s this year. One by a woman pregnant with her first child sang a heartfelt song of what Mary was thinking in leading up to the birth of her Savior. The other a traditional hymn sung by our own talented Hayden. He is the grandchild of longtime members who have always said how great their grandchild was. Now that he’s a regular in our services, I know they weren’t bragging – just stating a fact. A fact that lead to a chorus of “Amens!” after his song was sung.

Of all the Christmas hymns, the one I think of all year is the third verse of “Away in a Manger”. Here are the words:

Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask Thee to stay
Close by me forever, and love me, I pray;
Bless all the dear children in Thy tender care,
And fit us for Heaven to live with Thee there.

Giving Thanks – November 4

I give thanks for family!

Most of these photos were taken in October 2004 when we celebrated my dad’s 80th birthday for him, since he was busy chatting it up in Heaven. Obviously, his photo was taken well before, but a few others were taken after, such as his new great-grandchildren. Two in this grouping are no longer with us here, but we will all be together again one day. It’s worth the wait to enjoy all of the family … immediate, mom’s side, dad’s side, and those we’ve adopted into our hearts.

Family!

Harriet: Heaven Shines Brighter

When I hear, “Treasures in Heaven”, I think of the loved ones who have gone there before me. The treasure will be to reunite with them. Last week, the light in Heaven went up a notch or two when Harriet arrived at the gate.

Harriet is one of the many women in my church whom I consider a grandmother. Her light on earth could not be dimmed. She endured the bad and shared the good. As with most of us, her health was not always as good as desired. No matter, she lived her life with grace, dignity, and faith.

When I would ask on Sunday after worship how she was doing, she’d often reply, “I am here today.” She lived in the moment. Each day was a gift and each person in her life was a blessing. I wrote a tale of her on this blog a couple of years ago, and I’ll share it again. It just goes to show that some people have to get REALLY old before they get old at all:

“I was walking out of church with a woman in her 80’s. She was taking notes. I was in my 30’s. I was taking notes.

“She then says to me, “Ever since my stroke, I have to take notes to remember upcoming events and prayer requests.”

“Ummm, I’ve been taking notes to remember such things since I was in my teens!

“Morale of the Story: Some of us have the mental capacity of a stroke victim … without benefit of a medical condition.”

Harriet was a blessing to know, a living inspiration, and I will greatly miss her in the flesh. Yet, I will hold her in my heart always. In spirit, she lives on.

Morale of the Story: Death is not the end, it is another beginning with peace of mind, heart, and body.
