Giving Thanks – November 12

Today I am giving thanks for employment. This year we’ve moved twice, been through much and repeated upheaval, and each of us have had our own challenges outside of the office. Yet we are an amazing team of women who work well together, hash out problems together, celebrate solutions together, and continue to enjoy each other after several years and many changes.

We also have a variety of activities at work and never know what question will be facing us next, which offers the variety I seek in a workplace. Although some questions stump me, I can turn to my office colleagues. If we don’t find the answer, I can reach out to our State of Michigan network. If that doesn’t pan out, I can then reach out nationally. By then, someone somewhere usually has the answer. Granted, the answer might not be what we’d hoped for, but the facts have been culled out.

May you know and achieve a workplace that brings you joy and fulfillment. I know it’s easier said than done, which makes me extra thankful and grateful for this gift at this time.

Giving Thanks – November 7

I give thanks for humor. In 2006, I was downsized from work. To say the least, I was down in the dumps. In order to cheer me up, a friend took me to the dump! Ironic, right?

It was one of the best days I’ve ever had with her and her family. Her mom, her daughter, and I joined her on a trip to the dump where her family works. I got a tour of the whole shebang! After, we stopped for a little shopping and ice cream at the Sugar Bear in Paw Paw.

When you’re down in the dumps, you might find the dump refreshing.

After a Long Day

This photo was taken at the end of a long but satisfying day. In my travels for work, I took three classes, each a week-long, with colleagues from around the state within one year. In June of 2010, one of those classes was only a half hour from a most delightful town: Frankenmuth, Michigan.

Each night, my colleagues and I would study over dinner, but on this night, we drove the half hour to Frankenmuth first. I don’t recall if we had dinner in Zehnders or Bavarian Inn, but I know I had the delicious chicken. I know we discussed the class for that day. There is nothing like taking a pass or fail class with colleagues who have good study skills.

After a sumptuous dinner and feeling better about what we learned that day for the coming test, we walked around the town for a while. Heading to the parking lot, we saw this site. It just relaxed me. What a beautiful night!

Moral of the Story: There are things in this world that are difficult, but there are other things that make the difficult less so.

Bliss by Eric Weiner

Bliss by Eric Weiner was an interesting mission to seek out what happiness means to people around the world.

This was an intriguing read. In Eric’s travels around the world, he talked with people from each area asking what made them happy. The answer varied from place to place: friends, family, free time, work, money, and alcohol availability were just a few of the answers.

I read this slowly, and didn’t finish in time for book group. I couldn’t get into it at first. It took me about 6 months to complete, as the least. Perhaps it will go more quickly for you. For me, happiness was not reading this book, but having finished it after so long a time.

The image I’ve selected for this portrays two of the things in life that put a smile in my heart: reading and pets.

Am I Late?

This morning, I awoke to the sunlight and a hungry cat. After about 10 seconds, I realized that those two things mean that I was NOT on time for work. After I finished cussing like a sailor and flying out of bed (practically literally), I called my supervisor to let her know I’d be in as soon as humanly and traffic-wise possible. (Fortunately, I was able to work through lunch to make up the difference.)

Finally, after a fast, frantic, and furious preparation to forge on to the office, I remembered something:

A former colleague was always on time (always in this case is not extreme language). If she were going to be out for any reason, she would let us know as far in advance as possible, even for sick days (calling in at 2 a.m. while still hanging over the porcelain throne). Timeliness was one of her many virtues.

One morning, she wasn’t in the office. At five minutes after the hour, she wasn’t there and no one had a message of any kind from her. At ten after we starting fearing the worst. By a quarter after I called her home. Our conversation went something like this:

She said, “Hello?”

I said, “Hello! How are you today?”

She said, “I’m fine, but it’s Saturday so I’m sleeping in.”

I said, “Are you sure it’s Saturday?”

She said, “Of course! The alarm didn’t go off.”

I said, “Are you sure it’s not earlier in the week?”

She said, “Today is Saturday! Why are you calling me?”

I said, “Because it’s not Saturday. It’s Thursday.”

She said, “No silly, it’s Saturday.”

I (who is NOT a morning person) said, “Would I be up at this hour on a Saturday?”

She was silent for a long while.

Then she said, “I’ll be in as fast as I can get there!”

Traveling

What a week, and it’s not even over.

Traveling to take a friend to visit her parents.

Traveling to meet friends for a retreat.

Traveling for a work meeting out of town.

Traveling to take my mom to a museum for Mother’s Day.

Traveling to and from the office.

Traveling to and from the laundry room.

Traveling through all of the various e-mail at work and at home.

Traveling.

I thank the Lord to see the sunset from my own window.

Morale of the Story: Traveling isn’t for everyone. Sometimes the view from home is the best view available.

Beauty

Small BeautyWhere do you find beauty?

In people? I hope you do every day.

In play? I hope you do every day.

In things? Only when they bring you joy.

In memories? I hope you do every day.

In work? I hope no more than five days a week.

In God’s creations? I hope you do every day.

Where do you find beauty?

Get a mirror!

Morale of the Story: You are beauty!
