The Care Giver

Yet again with the nasty migraines. Today was another dreadful one, but I had help getting through.

This little Miss saw me through. She put her paw on my cheek now and again and licked my forehead, I believe to make sure I didn’t also have a fever. She is such a good care giver!

Moral of the Story: No matter how bad you feel or how sick you might get, someone wants you well.

I’m So Embarrassed!

Have you ever been embarrassed?

I sure have. I’ve felt like I will never get over the horrible, idiotic thing I’ve done, such as replying to all parties in a work e-mail that I won’t be able to go to the recommended event because I’ll be doing something or other I’d ONLY like the one person to know. But no, I had to hit “reply all” instead of “reply”. And yet, someone else replies that they’ve done the same thing, or that they completely understand what I’ll be doing and share a similar story.

I used to be very shy and embarrass easily. I thought I was the only one who experienced these things or felt that way.

Over time, I have learned that I am so very not alone, and many people have these similar feelings. Over time, I have grown more confident because it is a comfort that I’m not alone. And yet, I still get embarrassed from time to time. Just like this kitty who found my bad joke a sad attempt at humor.

Moral of the Story: With age and experiences, some things get better. There is hope for good things to come!

Juniper

Back in ’06 I was unhappy for most of the year. It was my first time being laid off. I didn’t take it well. My brother made it better for a while with a fun job.

Fortunately, upon agreement for time off to go to interviews, my brother hired me to work his fruit stand for the season. My brother hand-picks all of his fruit, and he can’t sell it and pick it all at once. While working on the stand, two other men in my life took pity on me as well. This handsome fellow is one of those men.

A friend of my brother’s dropped off his cat for my brother to care for. We’ve no idea how old he was, but he as a kind old gent. He kept me company while working the stand, especially when there were no customers. Too many customers at once, and he felt his attention was no not needed for long whiles.

My brother’s dog also sat with me now and again, but he liked to split his time 50/50 between the orchard with my brother or me in the stand. Juniper had no compunction to be in the orchard. He only desired a comfortable spot to sit and some one-on-one attention. He liked the petting now and then, and he demanded a solid scratching behind the ears multiple times daily, but he mostly liked to chat with me. We had conversations that went on for hours on most every topic either of us could think up. In this, he helped give me the energy to fill the fruit baskets over and over while my brother picked all he could to keep the stand full for his many customers.

This gent wasn’t with us long, but he left pleasant memories behind. And many conversations that kept my spirits up.

Moral of the Story: Friends come in many shapes, sizes, and species. Enjoy them while they are with you. Remember them with love when they’ve passed on.

Life Lesson: Toes

I like my toes. They’ve always fascinated me. They are quite funny looking – so small, but each one has a joint that I can bend!

Toes are the bone and muscle that make walking a breeze, and they give standing that little bit of wiggle room.

My toes have tiny nails. I feel bad when I get pedicures because the nail artist has to get out a magnifying glass to find the nails.

I adore cat toes. Typically you only see the nail if they want us to. They can easily hide their toe nails if we’re not allowed to see them.

Yet cat toe nails come out when a cat needs them most. Like cleaning them. And then nibbling away the outer shell to spit them at people.

Can you clean your toes like this? I sure can’t! And even if I could … trust me, I wouldn’t.

Peace

What does peace mean to you?

Friends, family, and faith are top on the list for me.

Next are naps, cats, and crafts.

Following: Example of how to nap well.

There is Light

The road is long, the journey both excruciating and exhilarating.

There are times that it seems there will not be any light to come, and there will be light.

There will be dirt roads, freshly paved roads, swervy curvy roads, and straight as an arrow roads.

There will be construction seasons, snowy seasons, rainy seasons, and icy seasons.

There will be wacky drivers, drivers with manners, drivers with distractions, and drivers who let you in when they shouldn’t.

Good or bad, God will see you through it. It may not feel like it at the time, but Angels are with you.

May you find peace in your heart, love in your life, and hope for tomorrow.

Uh-oh, I’m Late!

My brother’s apple orchard is open and selling fruit. However, he has this lazy sister who hasn’t yet updated his website. I feel so bad that he has such a lousy sister!

So, here’s what his apples were selling for five years ago. We shall see what the Greenings are going for this year at his stand. This is why I say it’s okay to nag me to get things done, especially anything away from the office. I have plenty of reminders there, but never enough for my life outside of work. So, if you go to his website and see there’s no listing of his current pickings, don’t hesitate to remind me I’m falling down on one of my volunteer jobs.

Golden Flavor

This photo was taken way back in October of 2009. That was another great year for apples. A bit too much of a good thing based on this image of a weighed down branch from a Golden Delicious apple tree. No matter the size, the taste is worth more than its weight in gold!

Although Michigan apples are edible in September, many varieties are not available until October. One of these is the Golden Delicious. There is a fun children’s story about how these came to be. A copy is available at the Kalamazoo Public Library, titled Golden Delicious: A Cinderella Apple Story by Anna Egan Smucker with illustrator Kathleen Kemly.

Over the years my taste in apples (and food in general) has changed. As a child, I preferred the Red Delicious apples. Here’s a story about that from Kindergarten:

“What’s your favorite apple?” said the little boy.

“Red Delicious,” said I.

“No, I mean your favorite type of apple,” said the little boy.

“Red Delicious,” said I.

“No, I know they are all red, but what kind do you like?” said the little boy.

“They are not all red. My favorite is Red Delicious.” said I.

“NO! There are many kinds. What is your favorite?” said the little boy.

“My favorite is Red Delicious. What is your favorite?” said I.

“I don’t know what kinds there are,” said the little boy.

“Well, some that my brother sells are Golden Delicious, it’s yellow; Greenings, those are green; and here are a few reds: MacIntosh, Red Delicious, Northern Spy, Courtland, Winesap, Paula Red, Snow, …”

He never questioned my knowledge of fruit or farming again.
